Victoria Real Estate Board’s Community Relations Committee Helps Combat Food Insecurity at the Rainbow Kitchen
Members of the Victoria Real Estate Board’s (VREB) Community Relations Committee came together on September 9 to volunteer for their annual REALTORS Care® Day. After their successful 2024 REALTORS Care® Day, volunteers returned to Rainbow Kitchen, continuing their support for this cornerstone of food security in Greater Victoria.
Since its founding in 2010, Rainbow Kitchen has served over 10,000 meals each month. Last year, the organization provided 250,000 meals through its breakfast and lunch services, school meal programs, and Rainbow Market, which distributes groceries free of cost to those in need. Beyond feeding people, Rainbow Kitchen also works to reduce food waste by rescuing thousands of pounds of surplus food each month from local grocery stores and farms. As food insecurity continues to rise across Canada, Rainbow Kitchen provides much-needed relief to community members, addressing a growing need that often goes hand-in-hand with housing insecurity.
During their REALTORS Care® Day, REALTOR® volunteers contributed by serving hot lunches to people in need from across Greater Victoria. Their efforts helped ensure that community members were welcomed with a warm meal and a friendly atmosphere, reflecting Rainbow Kitchen’s mission of “filling bellies and feeding souls.”
“At Rainbow Kitchen, a meal means so much more, it means community. Our committee volunteers are extremely proud to give back,” said Bev Berger, VREB Community Relations Committee Chair.
From its humble beginnings in a small church hall to becoming the second-largest community kitchen in Victoria, Rainbow Kitchen’s growth is remarkable. For returning volunteers, participating again underscored how essential the organization has become to the community and how meaningful their continued support is
The Victoria Real Estate Board’s support of Rainbow Kitchen is just one example of how local REALTORS® are strengthening their community. VREB also donated $5,000 to Rainbow Kitchen, demonstrating ongoing dedication to making a positive impact in Greater Victoria.
